"In all ranks of life the human heart yearns for the beautiful; and the beautiful things that God makes are his gift to all alike." ~ Harriet Beecher Stowe

Specializing in wildlife and nature, I enjoy the research in making my illustrations look realistic. I like to include little surprises to discover especially in the children's book illustrations. A rabbit sleeping behind a bush, butterflies on the flowers or chipmunks watching the action. For the children's books I have illustrated I've used a watercolor wash then added colored pencil for softness and detail. For a cookbook, detailed graphite pencil drawings. And spot illustrations in pen and ink. Also a brochure project was rendered in pen and ink with a watercolor wash.

These pieces are of various subjects, landscapes and natural subjects being the majority of the work. Detailed scenes of farmland and local plant life are subjects revisited from the area around where we live in Ohio's Amish Country. Some scenes are from our travels to Lake Erie and other parts of the country. The landscape changes quickly around here. My goal is to capture it in my art before it disappears.
The landscapes are painted in pastel and graphite and colored pencil. Limited edition reproductions are available of some of the pieces as well as custom commissions. Information and price list are available upon request.

I enjoy the process of drawing house portraits and businesses with the greatest detail. I feel there are many features which give the buildings character and would lose their personality if left out.
I can draw your home or other structure in graphite or colored pencil, pen and ink or pen and ink with a watercolor wash. They are rendered on acid free paper or Bristol board from photographs in various sizes. Clients have commissioned the portraits for gifts, greeting cards, and advertising purposes.

In choosing a subject to paint I consider if it's a place where I would like to spend some time. Hopefully it will be the kind of scene that others will find peace in as well. As the picture develops it may take me to a different end than expected. And that's OK. It's part of the inspiration-first in the choice of subject and then during the work. I like the way Madeleine L'Engle expresses it in her book Walking on Water. "Inspiration far more often comes during the work than before it because the largest part of the job of the artist is to listen to the work and to go where it tells him to go." I'm finding that to be so true.
